Caring for Your Brush

Properly cared for, your Jean-Pierre hairbrush should provide years of trouble-free enjoyment.  By following these simple guidelines you will greatly extend the life of the product.

Cleaning After Each Use - Using Dry Method

Using a long tooth comb, gently remove any hair that may have accumulated in the bristles by inserting the comb near the rubber cushion and drawing it toward the tips of the bristles. Work your way around the perimeter of the brush until the brush is clean.

Cleaning Periodically  - Using Wet Method (Cushioned Brushes Only)

As part of regular use, your hair brush will accumulate dust, dirt, dander, oils, and chemicals from hair care products such as mousses, gels, and hair sprays.  Frequent cleaning will keep your Jean-Pierre hairbrush in top condition for many years.  A good rule of thumb is to wet clean the brush monthly if you use the brush daily.  More frequently, if the brush is being used with hair products such as mousses, gels, or hair sprays, which allowed to accumulate may cause the rubber cushion to deteriorate.

Wet Cleaning

Prepare a solution of lukewarm (never hot) soapy water by filling your sink with approximately one gallon (4 liters) of lukewarm water and adding approximately one teaspoon (5 ml) of shampoo.

NOTE: Never use hot water or harsh cleaners such as detergents, ammonia, bleach, vinegar, etc. to clean your brush.  Doing so will cause irreparable damage.

Holding the brush horizontally with the tips of the bristles pointing downward, dip the bristle tips in the soapy water deep enough that the water just begins to contact the rubber cushion.  Do not immerse the brush under water.  Hold the brush in this position for approximately 15-30 seconds.

Next, rinse the brush for several seconds under cold or lukewarm (never hot)  running water by holding the brush vertically with the handle pointing upwards and in a manner that prevents water from entering the vent hole in the rubber cushion.

After rinsing, gently shake off any excess water.  Allow the brush to air dry at room temperature with the bristles facing upwards.

Brush Care Do's and Don'ts

Do ...clean the brush after each use.  Refer to Cleaning After Each Use - Using Dry Method for detailed instructions.

Do ...periodically "wet" clean the brush.   A good rule of thumb is to wet clean the brush monthly if you use the brush daily.   More frequently, if the brush is being used with hair products such as mousses, gels, or hair sprays.  Refer to Cleaning Periodically - Using Wet Method for detailed instructions.

Don't ...machine wash your hair brush by placing it a dishwasher or clothes washing machine.

Don't ...machine dry your brush by using a hairdryer or placing the brush in a clothes dryer or microwave oven.

Don't ...use a Natural Boar Bristle in the shower, bath, pool, or any other environment where the bristles will get wet for prolonged periods.  Boar bristle is a natural product, which like human hair, absorbs moisture.  Prolonged contact with water may cause the bristles to twist or curl.

Don't  ...allow the brush to be exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods.  Ultra-violet light will cause the rubber cushion to dry out and deteriorate prematurely.  Excessive heat from direct sunlight can distort plastic bodies and cause wooden bodies to dry out and crack

Don't ...immerse the brush in water.  Doing so will allow water to enter the vent hole on cushioned brushes.  Immersing a wooden bodied brush may cause the wood to absorb water and may cause damage to the finish or cause the body to swell and crack.

Don't ...use the brush for a purpose or in a manner which was not intended.  Such as; pet grooming, scrubbing, etc.

Don't ...use strong cleaners or solvents such as, ammonia, bleach, alcohol, mineral spirits, benzene, nail polish remover, oils or waxes to clean the brush body or rubber cushion.  Contact with these products may cause damage to the body of the brush and will cause the rubber cushion to deteriorate prematurely.
